Very busy this week so there's not too much for today...just a snapshot of a piece in progress. I used a hand knitting machine to knit the first wool layer...then wet felted some wool roving into it...then stitched large tucks and finally needle felted a few shades of green. Not sure what's next...

A new lichen piece (Lichen 3). It's made from hand dyed wool roving, handmade felt, discharged black silk gauze and threads. The base layer is my first experiment in wet felting... I needle felted into the bottom layer and then stitched the entire piece.

I first discovered Deborah Gregory's stunning work in an issue of Surface Design Journal. These are pieces from her Cycles series.

From her artist's statement, "The season’s cycles in the natural world and the mystery of what is beyond the visible inform my art. I grew up on a tidal inlet in a New England fishing town. Salt water, the sea, and the rocky shore, the ocean smells and dampness formed my world. Now, I live on the Pacific Coast near Seattle, Washington, and water is still an important part of what makes me feel at home. The Northwest climate is green, lush and temperate. Organic matter decomposes quickly in our dampness."

A sneak peak of a triptych I'm working on. It's hand painted velvet with free-motion machine stitching. I'll hopefully be photographing all three together soon...waiting for brighter weather.

It's still rainy here, but it makes everything look saturated. A little like these fabrics I just dyed. I'm trying out some harem cloth and rayon/silk velvet from Dharmatrading.com. The velvet dyes beautifully, but I'm not sure about using velvet in my work...need to find a way for it to look more natural. Both were dyed with Fiber Reactive dyes using the soda soak method.

RULE ONE: Find a place you trust, and then try trusting it for awhile.

RULE TWO: General duties of a student - pull everything out of your teacher; pull everything out of your fellow students.

RULE THREE: General duties of a teacher - pull everything out of your students.

RULE FOUR: Consider everything an experiment.

RULE FIVE: be self-disciplined - this means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way.

RULE SIX: Nothing is a mistake. There's no win and no fail, there's only make.

RULE SEVEN: The only rule is work. If you work it will lead to something. It's the people who do all of the work all of the time who eventually catch on to things.

RULE EIGHT: Don't try to create and analyze at the same time. They're different processes.

RULE NINE: Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It's lighter than you think.

RULE TEN: "We're breaking all the rules. Even our own rules. And how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for X quantities." (John Cage)

HINTS: Always be around. Come or go to everything. Always go to classes. Read anything you can get your hands on. Look at movies carefully, often. Save everything - it might come in handy later.

I spent my week days interning with designer, Zandra Rhodes and my weekends being a tourist around the city. SDA conference highlights

This past weekend I was able to attend my first ever Surface Design Conference in Kansas City, MO. It was a great experience to be able to learn from professional artists. I mainly attended the lectures and was very impressed with all of the speakers. There were also many fiber art exhibits in the area as well as the Points of Departure exhibition of student work. I'm excited to share a few of my favorite photos. All of the work was amazing and has definitely inspired to me to get working in the studio.

Above: These are works by El Anatsui, made from aluminum wrappings from the tops of bottles and other found items. They are absolutely amazing in person and were some of my favorites.

These are works by Regina Benson. Her show, On the Curve: New Dimensional Works from Nature's Studio, was on display at the Bryon C. Cohen Gallery for Contemporary Art. I was so so excited to see her work in person. I stumbled upon her art a few years ago while browsing online and just love the surface dimension she creates in the fabric.

Here are a few new photos taken by Shai Eynav. These designs were created for my senior Cornell Design League collection and I will now be entering them in the International Textile and Apparel desgin competition. I love Shai's photos...they always look so amazing! Just added them to my porfolio, here. I now have quite a collection of Shai's work thanks to the Fiber Science & Apparel Design Dept. at Cornell.

In other news...tomorrow I leave for the Surface Design Conference in Kansas City, MO. This is very exciting for a few reasons... First, it is my first time going to the SDA conference. I can't wait to be surrounded by fiber artists for a few days. I'm ready to be inspired. Second, this will be my first trip on a plane ever! Yes, I know its funny but my family just always road tripped around the U.S. And last...two of my pieces will be shown at the SDA's student exhibition, Points of Departure! So its gonna be a very exciting week. I'll be back on Sunday with lots of pics to post.

p.s. Just graduated from Cornell University this past weekend!!!!! Wish me luck in the real world :)
